World's premier conference on software engineering 2008 takes place in Germany

From 10 - 18 May 2008 the International Conference on Software Engineering (ICSE) takes place in Leipzig. Almost 1.000 scientists and practitioners from all over the world are expected to participate in the week-long event to discuss latest innovations, trends, experiences, and challenges concerning software engineering.

Leipzig joins the list of hosting cities like Tokyo, Singapore, Melbourne, and Los Angeles. After Munich (1979) and Berlin (1996), ICSE returns to Germany for the third time. Besides the USA, Germany is the only country holding the conference three times. In Japan and Great Britain it took place twice.

Furthermore, two anniversaries will be celebrated in the university city. The ICSE conference will be held for the thirtieth time, an impressive number considering the age of this topic. The relevance and attractiveness increased continuously with conference programs of highest quality combined with the growing industrial significance of software.

The second anniversary has a special connection to Germany: The term "Software Engineering" was coined 40 years ago at a conference in Garmisch. For the first time software was positioned as an industrial commodity, and the topic of what aspects of industrial production processes should apply to software development was started.

The organization of the ICSE in Leipzig 2008 is going to be accomplished by a group of international software experts from industry and academia headed by Prof. Dr. Wilhelm Schäfer from the University of Paderborn as general chair. Prof. Dr. Volker Gruhn (University of Leipzig) and Prof. Dr. Matthew Dwyer (University of Nebraska) are responsible for compiling the technical main conference program. The demanding selection criteria of the conference guarantee highest quality. Participation and publication of a paper at this conference is considered a mark of distinction.

Currently, industry-specific themes encompassing the sectors of automobile software engineering, health care and telecommunication are planned, including particularly reports based on experience. Among others Prof. Dr. Lori Clarke from the University of Massachusetts will hold a keynote on formal processes of software quality control within the realm of health care as well as Dr. Sam Adams from IBM who will report on The Future of End User Programming. Furthermore, the conference will be accompanied by an entertaining social and cultural program offering to visit the Gewandhausorchester headed by John Mauceri, for example, thereby providing additional networking opportunities.

The local organization lies with the Applied Telematics/e-Business Group at the Department of Computer Science, University of Leipzig. The Applied Telematics/e-Business Group is endowed by Deutsche Telekom AG. The presentations will be held at the Westin Hotel Leipzig and concerning the main part of the conference (14 - 16 May) at the Conference Center Leipzig. ICSE is a series of conferences organized by the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) and the IEEE Computer Society, which are the world's largest associations for computer sciences containing a total of 180.000 members.

Additionally, during the conference, commercial and academic organizations are offered to enhance their respective degrees of popularity and emphasize proximity to research through sponsorship. For High-Tech-Companies, the opportunities of recruiting during the conference will be of great interest. Many highly trained German as well as international postgraduates will participate at the conference (one third of the 1.000 attendants belong to this group). Having met the high requirements on accepted publications gives an indication of their exceptional qualification.
