Call for Submisssions
Software Engineering Education

Proper education and training significantly improve the state of practice in software engineering and are also prerequisites for advancing the state of the art in software engineering.

The goal of the ICSE Software Engineering Education (SEE) track is to expose, analyze, and investigate what is difficult and peculiar about teaching and learning software engineering and how we can shape and improve our educational activities.

The SEE track at ICSE 2008 continues a tradition of providing a distinguished forum for discussing topics related to software engineering education and training, promoting innovations, sharing experience, and offering new directions.

We invite top-quality papers on software engineering education in two categories:

(1)

Full papers, up to 10 pages, documenting well-articulated and well-established results,

(2)

Short papers, up to 4 pages, describing new results that may not have been fully evaluated yet, but are nonetheless important to share with the community.

Topics of interest include, but are not limited to:

Design of software engineering curricula, both for major and minor degrees
Software engineering in Computer Science curricula
Design of software engineering courses, course units, and course projects
Inter-disciplinary curricula and courses
Integrating internships and practical experience into SEE
The impact of new methods, tools and technologies on teaching SE, for example agile development, model-driven development, open source tools, or service-orientation
The role of security, privacy, and dependability in SEE
Corporate training
Software engineering in high school
Collaborative projects between industry and academia
International education and culture
Teaching methods, materials, and technology
Cognitive and personality aspects (motivation, learning models, attitudes, etc.)
How can we teach in-the-small what is only relevant in-the-large?
Learning software engineering in a globalized economy
Studies of educational practices
Evaluation, assessment and certification

Submission instructions

Originality

Papers must describe original work that has not been submitted to or presented at other forums.

Formatting of papers

Papers must conform, at time of submission, to the ICSE 2008 Format and Submission Guidelines, and must not exceed 10 pages (for full papers) or 4 pages (for short papers), including all text, references, appendices, and figures. All submissions must be in English.

How to submit

Papers must be submitted electronically via CyberChairPRO. The deadline for software engineering education paper submissions is 12 October 2007.

Reviewing

Each submission will be reviewed by members of the ICSE 2008 Software Engineering Education Program Committee according to the evaluation criteria given below. The selection of the criteria to be used is determined by the type of the submitted work (see below).

Submissions that do not comply with the submission instructions or are obviously out of the scope of the ICSE SEE track will be rejected without review.

Evaluation Criteria

Papers presenting new solutions

The proposed solution technique or its application to this kind of problem must be novel and sound. The author(s) must provide a preliminary validation of the proposed solution, for example, a proof-of-concept and/or sound arguments that the solution technique will work and that it will scale to real-world-sized problems. Results must be stated clearly enough so that the author(s) or others can further validate them in future research. The paper should also be clear about its contributions with respect to related work by others and to previous work by the author(s).

Papers evaluating a problem, a solution, or an approach

Such papers evaluate existing problem situations or validate proposed solutions with scientific means, i.e. by empirical studies, experiments, case studies, simulations, formal analyses, etc. The topic of the evaluation presented in the paper as well as its causal or logical properties must be clearly stated. The research method must be sound and appropriate. The research must be novel or, otherwise, the results must constitute a significant increase of knowledge over prior results. The results must be relevant and/or (statistically) significant. Furthermore, the research should be situated in the context of related work by others and previous work by the author(s).

Practice and experience papers

The practice must be clearly described and its context must be given. Reported experience must be relevant and should include lessons learned. Readers should be able to follow easily and draw conclusions for their own practice.

Papers presenting a vision

Vision papers sketch new ways of looking at things, present creative new ideas, rethink current notions, etc. A vision paper should be revealing and thought-provoking, thus providing new insight for the reader. The presented ideas must be original and well considered. Papers that only sketch an idea or propose research on some topic will be rejected.

Acceptance

Accepted papers will be published in the ICSE 2008 conference proceedings which will also be available electronically. Upon notification of acceptance, authors of accepted papers will be asked to complete a copyright transfer form and will receive further instructions for preparing their camera ready versions. At least one author must attend ICSE 2008 and present the paper at the conference.
